Two by Two, Mark 6:6b-13
Jesus sent out his 12 disciples in pairs to tell the story of God’s love and heal the sick. Jesus told them not to bring anything with them on their travels, and informed them that God would provide for them by way of people who would welcome them into their home. He also warned them that there may be people who will not listen to their message. Jesus wants us to share the good news with people we meet too. How comfortable are you doing this? What would make you more comfortable?

Zacchaeus, Luke 19:1-8
Zacchaeus was a tax collector and he often cheated people by collecting too much money and keeping the rest for himself. When Jesus came to Jericho, Zacchaeus climbed a sycamore tree to be able to see him above the crowd. Jesus stopped at the tree and called Zacchaeus down so that he could go and stay at his house. Zacchaeus repented of his sins, but others grumbled about Jesus spending time with a sinner. Jesus said that he had come to find and save the lost. Have you welcomed Jesus into your heart? Have you turned away from doing wrong things and started to live the way Jesus teaches us to live? Can you give an example of how you’ve turned away from sin and been changed?

Jesus and the Children, Mark 10:13-16
People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples criticized them. Jesus was not happy with his disciples. He said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” Jesus took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them. Jesus loves children. Do you? Do you marvel at their innocence, at their trust, at their wonder? Do you encourage these attributes in your own children? Do you see them in yourself?

Mary and Martha, Luke 10:38-42
One day Jesus and his disciples were staying with two friends, named Mary and Martha. While Martha was busy preparing food and taking care of her guests, her sister Martha sat at Jesus’ feet and listenend to him teach. Martha asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her. But Jesus would not, he told Martha that Mary was choosing to do the right thing. Preparing food and doing chores are important, however learning from Jesus and about Jesus is more important. It’s important to strike the right balance in life between learning more about Jesus, God and the Truth and doing those things God has called us to do. In what ways can you learn more about Jesus? In what ways do you spend time with Jesus? Have you struck the right balance in your life?

Follow Me, Matthew! Mark 2:13-17
Levi (also known as Matthew) was a tax collector. Because tax collector’s often collected more money than requried by the Romans and kept the extra for themselves, they were considered to be theives and sinners. As Jesus walked along, he called out to Levi and told him to “Follow me”, just as he had with the fisherman James, John, Simon and Andrew. Levi followed Jesus, and Jesus had dinner at his house. When the teachers saw him eating with sinners, they asked why he ate with these people. Jesus said that it was not the healthy who need a doctor , but the sick. He had come to call sinners. It is good to know that Jesus is interested in us, even when we fail. No matter what we’ve done, God loves us and wants us to repent and return to him. It is also good to know that he also wants the person who has sinned against us, just as much. How might remembering this affect the way we treat someone who has hurt us?

Follow Me, Fishermen! Mark 1:16-20
A little while after Jesus was baptized, he walked along the shores of Lake Galilee and called to four fishermen. Jesus called out to Simon and his brother Andrew first, and then to James and his brother John. He asked them to put down their nets and to go with him. He would make them fishers of men and women. Each one left their nets and followed Jesus. Simon, Andrew, James and John each became a disciple of Jesus. What do you think Jesus meant when he said that he would make them fishers of men? Are you a follower of Jesus? What do you do that makes you a follower of Jesus? Do you fish for men and women?

Jesus is Baptized; Matthew 3:13-17
John was Jesus’ cousin, and was baptizing people in the Jordan river, when one day, Jesus came to be baptized by John. John was reluctant to baptize Jesus, because he knew that Jesus was God’s son and had no need to be baptized to symbolize the turning away from a sinful lifestyle to follow God. But Jesus insisted that God wanted John to baptize him. And when John did this, the spirit of God came down on Jesus and God announced Jesus as his Son, with whom He was pleased. Baptism is one way that we recognize and celebrate that we belong to God, and when a child is baptized in our church, the parent(s) and congregation make promises before God. Find out what those promises are and consider the ways they are being fulfilled

Jesus in the Temple: Luke 2:41-52January 15th
Each year Jesus and his family traveled to Jerusalem for the Passover Festival. The year that Jesus was 12, he stayed in Jerusalem to listen and ask questions of the Jewish teachers in the temple. But his family, who were traveling back home in a large group did not realize that he was not with them. Mary and Joseph were worried until they found him in the temple. Jesus was obedient to his parents and went home with them. As we grow, we are to learn about God, and ask questions about God. Are you curious about God? Do you ask questions to grown-ups about Him? Like Jesus, do you obey your parents?
